시카고 ACEP26에서 재난 시 의료 접근성을 다룬 연구초록 2건 구두발표
신희준 SCH 재난의학센터장은 시카고에서 열린 ACEP26 Research Forum에서 재난 상황의 의료 접근성과 지역사회 취약성을 주제로 한 연구초록 2건을 구두발표했습니다. 두 연구는 서로 다른 위험 속에서도 필요한 응급의료에 도달할 수 있는 지역사회를 만들기 위한 질문을 공유합니다.
10월 6일, RF47: EMS & Disaster 세션의 초록 #276 ‘Social Vulnerability and Hospital Access Loss After Hurricane Ian’은 미국 플로리다 남서부 610개 센서스 구역을 대상으로 공개자료 기반 지리공간 모델링을 수행했습니다. 홍수 노출과 사회적 취약성이 잠재적인 병원 도달 가능성 손실에 어떻게 함께 작용하는지 살펴보고, 해안뿐 아니라 내륙·농촌 지역의 대비 필요성도 제시했습니다.
10월 7일, RF66: EMS & Disaster 세션의 초록 #387 ‘TMAVI: A County-Level Medical Access Vulnerability Index for Mass Public Shooting Preparedness in the United States’는 미국 본토 3,109개 카운티를 분석했습니다. 과거 전술적 사건 부담, 응급실 접근성, 외상센터 접근성, 사회적 취약성을 통합해 응급의료·외상체계·공공안전 자원 배치에 활용할 수 있는 구조적 대비 공백을 살펴봤습니다. 향후 총기 사건 발생을 예측하는 모델로 제시된 연구는 아닙니다.
센터장은 지리공간 근거를 형평성 있는 재난 대비와 연결하고, 취약성 지도에서 실제 의료자원 배치와 지역 외상체계 준비로 나아가는 후속 검증의 중요성을 강조했습니다. 국제 동료들과의 학술 교류는 SCH 재난의학센터를 통한 교육·연구 협력을 발전시키는 계기가 되었습니다.
Two oral research abstracts at ACEP26: protecting medical access before disaster strikes
Heejun Shin, Director of the SCH Disaster Medicine Center, delivered two oral research abstracts at the ACEP26 Research Forum in Chicago. Both addressed how communities can retain access to lifesaving emergency care when disasters disrupt ordinary systems.
On 6 October, Abstract #276 in RF47: EMS & Disaster, ‘Social Vulnerability and Hospital Access Loss After Hurricane Ian,’ used open-data geospatial modeling across 610 census tracts in Southwest Florida. It examined how flood exposure and social vulnerability combine in potential losses of hospital reachability, drawing attention to preparedness needs in inland and rural communities as well as coastal areas.
On 7 October, Abstract #387 in RF66: EMS & Disaster, ‘TMAVI: A County-Level Medical Access Vulnerability Index for Mass Public Shooting Preparedness in the United States,’ analyzed 3,109 counties across the contiguous United States. It combined historical tactical incident burden, emergency department accessibility, trauma center access and social vulnerability to examine structural preparedness gaps. The framework was not presented as a prediction of future shootings.
The presentations connected geospatial evidence with equitable disaster preparedness. Shin identified field validation, medical resource deployment, resilient transportation and regional trauma preparedness as next steps, while reaffirming international education and research collaboration through the SCH Disaster Medicine Center.

TALEM 국제 민·군 협력 연락관 역할 소개, 재난의학 협력의 연결점 확대
신희준 센터장의 현장 기록에 따르면, 시카고 ACEP Tactical and Law Enforcement Medicine(TALEM) 분과 회의에서 차기 분과장 Dominique Wong이 센터장을 International Civil–Military Liaison Officer(국제 민·군 협력 연락관)로 소개했습니다. 기존 TALEM 국제 교류 활동을 바탕으로 이어가는 새로운 역할입니다.
분과 회의에서는 국제적 참여 확대, 출혈 통제와 신속한 환자 이송, 적시에 전문 외상치료에 접근하는 문제, 차세대 응급의학 의사를 위한 실습교육 등을 논의했습니다. 신희준 센터장은 전임 분과장 Keegan Bradley의 기여에 감사를 전하고 새 리더십과의 협력 의지를 밝혔습니다.
센터장이 제시한 방향은 민간 응급의료, 법집행 현장의 의료지원, 군 의료, 국제 재난의학 공동체 사이의 연결을 강화하는 것입니다. 국제 교육·공동연구·시뮬레이션 기반 훈련을 통해 서로 다른 의료체계가 다수사상자와 복합 CBRNe 상황에 함께 대비할 수 있도록 기여하겠다는 구상입니다.
SCH 재난의학센터는 센터장의 이러한 국제 전문 활동을 통해 임상 경험, 교육과 연구를 잇는 협력 논의를 이어갑니다.
A new International Civil–Military Liaison Officer role in ACEP TALEM
According to Heejun Shin’s field report, incoming Chair Dominique Wong introduced him as International Civil–Military Liaison Officer during the ACEP Tactical and Law Enforcement Medicine (TALEM) Section Meeting in Chicago. The role builds on his previous international outreach work with the section.
The meeting addressed growing international engagement, hemorrhage control, rapid casualty evacuation, timely access to definitive trauma care and hands-on education for the next generation of emergency physicians. Shin thanked outgoing Chair Keegan Bradley and welcomed the incoming leadership team.
His stated vision is to strengthen connections among civilian emergency medicine, law-enforcement medical support, military medicine and the international disaster medicine community. He identified international education, collaborative research and simulation-based training as ways to improve preparedness across medical systems for mass-casualty and complex CBRNe events.
These professional activities provide further opportunities for the SCH Disaster Medicine Center to connect clinical experience, education and research through international dialogue.

신희준 센터장은 ACEP TALEM 분과 구성원으로서 시카고 ACEP26의 Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association(EMRA) 전술의학 교육 세션에 참여했습니다. 시연과 시뮬레이션을 통해 전술적 응급처치, 고위험 환경의 의료 대응, 출혈 통제와 생명구조 외상 처치를 접했습니다.
센터장은 동료들의 현장 경험과 교육 전문성을 배우고 나누는 기회였다고 기록했습니다. 예정된 Research Forum 구두발표 일정으로 세션 전체에 함께하지는 못했지만, 교육 현장에서의 만남은 임상 전문성·대응 준비·국제 민군협력의 연결 필요성을 재확인하는 계기가 되었습니다.
센터의 교육 활동은 가르치는 경험과 배우는 경험이 함께 쌓이는 과정입니다. 이번 참여에서 얻은 관점과 국제 동료들과의 교류를 향후 교육·연구·훈련 협력의 논의로 이어가겠다는 뜻을 전했습니다.
Learning with EMRA and TALEM: connecting clinical expertise and operational readiness
As a member of ACEP’s TALEM Section, Heejun Shin participated in an Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA) tactical medicine educational session at ACEP26 in Chicago. Practical demonstrations and simulation covered tactical emergency care, medical operations in high-threat environments, hemorrhage control and lifesaving trauma interventions.
He described the session as an opportunity to learn from colleagues’ operational experience and educational expertise. His scheduled Research Forum presentations prevented him from attending the entire session, but the experience reinforced the importance of connecting clinical expertise, operational readiness and international civilian–military collaboration.
For the SCH Disaster Medicine Center, education develops through both teaching and continued learning. Shin expressed his intention to build on these professional exchanges in future education, research and preparedness activities.

신희준 센터장은 시카고 ACEP26의 Disaster Medicine Section Meeting에 참여하고, 10월 7일 현장 기록을 통해 재난의학 전문교육과 국제 협력에 대한 생각을 나눴습니다.
센터장은 차세대 재난의학 의사의 교육과 평가를 논의할 때 임상, 보건의료체계 대비, CBRNe 등 고위험 위협, 위기상황 진료체계, 시뮬레이션·훈련, 민군협력, 공중보건과 인도적 대응을 함께 연결해야 한다고 강조했습니다.
특히 미국과 아시아를 포함한 국제 공동체 사이에서 경험과 근거를 상호 공유하는 방향을 제시했습니다. 해외 교육모델을 배우는 데서 나아가 각 지역의 경험과 연구를 전문분야의 발전에 기여하는 것이 중요하다는 관점입니다.
BIDMC 재난의학 펠로우십 동료와 WADEM 이사회 동료 등과의 재회도 이어졌습니다. 이러한 학술적 만남은 SCH 재난의학센터가 한국의 임상·교육 경험을 국제 논의와 연결하고, 함께 배우는 관계를 유지하는 활동의 일부입니다.
Disaster Medicine Section discussions on training, preparedness and international connections
Heejun Shin attended the ACEP Disaster Medicine Section Meeting at ACEP26 in Chicago and shared his reflections in a field report dated 7 October.
He emphasized that discussion of training and assessment for future disaster medicine physicians should connect clinical care, health-system preparedness, CBRNe and other high-consequence threats, crisis standards of care, simulation and exercises, civilian–military coordination, public health and humanitarian response.
He also advocated stronger connections between the United States and the international community, including Asia. In this view, international participation involves contributing local experience and evidence as well as learning from educational models developed elsewhere.
Reunions with BIDMC Disaster Medicine Fellowship colleagues and fellow WADEM Board members formed part of these exchanges. Such encounters help connect the SCH Disaster Medicine Center’s clinical and educational experience in Korea with broader international discussions.

Research, leadership and learning, connected by people: reflections from Chicago
At ACEP26 in Chicago, Heejun Shin delivered two oral research abstracts, attended the Disaster Medicine and TALEM Section meetings, and participated in EMRA tactical medicine education. The visit brought research, learning and international professional engagement together.
In his closing reflections, he expressed gratitude for reunions with mentors and colleagues from the BIDMC Disaster Medicine Fellowship and the wider international community. Listening, sharing knowledge and reconnecting with the people who supported his development were central to the experience.
The SCH Disaster Medicine Center’s international activities develop through continued learning and sustained relationships as well as conference presentations. The Chicago record connects research, education and collaboration around the goal of helping communities access emergency care when it matters.

Invited speaker at CEMEC Winter School 2026
Heejun Shin, Director of the SCH Disaster Medicine Center, has been invited to speak at CEMEC Winter School in the Republic of San Marino on 23–25 October 2026. CEMEC has announced his participation in its official speaker spotlight.
The program covers health security, CBRNe, Emergency Medical Teams and disaster medicine. The organizer highlights his work in disaster preparedness, counter-terrorism medicine, simulation and immersive tabletop training.

Two studies accepted for oral presentation at ACEP Research Forum 2026
Two studies by Heejun Shin, Director of the SCH Disaster Medicine Center, have been accepted for oral presentation at ACEP Research Forum 2026 in Chicago, USA.
The studies examine a county-level Tactical Medical Access Vulnerability Index (TMAVI) for mass-shooting preparedness and the relationship between social vulnerability and loss of hospital access after Hurricane Ian. Both address how communities can reach needed medical care during disasters.

International policy analysis on AI and public-health preparedness for CBRN emergencies
An international paper coauthored by Heejun Shin was published online on 5 August 2026 in Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness.
The policy analysis discusses preparedness for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies in the Middle East and North Africa. It considers interagency coordination, data governance and the use of AI with validation and human oversight.
신희준 센터장은 2026년 7월 21일 미국 현지시간에 열린 국제 재난의학 온라인 강연에 연자로 참여했습니다. 한국시간으로는 7월 22일에 진행되었습니다.
강연에서는 재난의학 펠로우십에서 얻은 경험을 임상 실무, 교육체계와 조직 리더십으로 연결하는 과정을 소개했습니다. 이 강연 시리즈는 UMass, 미국 국립재난의학·공중보건센터(NCDMPH), 미국응급의학회(ACEP)의 협력으로 운영됩니다.
Invited ACEP lecture on disaster medicine practice, education and leadership
Heejun Shin delivered an invited international online disaster medicine lecture on 21 July 2026 in US local time, corresponding to 22 July in Korea.
He discussed translating disaster medicine fellowship experience into clinical practice, educational systems and organizational leadership. The lecture series is jointly organized by UMass, the US National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH), and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

2026년 7월 20일, 신희준 센터장은 한국국제보건의료재단(KOFIH) 이종욱 펠로우십에 참여한 라오스 보건의료인 8명을 대상으로 3시간의 CIREcourse: Chemical 교육을 진행했습니다.
교육은 중증도 분류·처치·이송(TTT) 실습과 화학 다수사상자 상황을 다루는 Operation WOMBAT 도상훈련을 연결했습니다. 참가자들은 반복적인 의사결정과 피드백을 통해 팀 기반 대응과 기관 간 협력 과정을 연습했습니다.
Chemical disaster response training for health professionals from Laos
On 20 July 2026, Heejun Shin delivered a three-hour CIREcourse: Chemical session for eight Lao health professionals participating in the KOFIH Lee Jong-wook Fellowship.
The course combined triage, treatment and transport (TTT) practice with Operation WOMBAT, a tabletop exercise for a chemical mass-casualty incident. Repeated decision-making and feedback supported practice in team response and interagency coordination.

신희준 센터장은 2026년 7월 16일 부산대학교병원에서 열린 제6회 대한외상소생협회 심포지엄에 초청연자로 참여했습니다.
강연에서는 전술적 응급환자 처치(TECC)를 중심으로 현장 안전과 신속한 의료 대응의 균형, 경찰·소방·응급의료팀의 공조, 현장에서 병원으로 이어지는 대응체계를 논의했습니다.

Heejun Shin was an invited speaker at the sixth Korean Trauma Resuscitation Association symposium, held at Pusan National University Hospital on 16 July 2026.
The lecture addressed Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC), balancing scene safety with prompt medical response, coordination among police, fire and emergency medical teams, and the transition from the scene to hospital care.

Faculty participation in the WADEM Disaster Medicine Summer School in San Marino
Heejun Shin served as faculty at the WADEM Disaster Medicine Summer School in San Marino from 3 to 5 July 2026.
The event brought together WADEM, CTM-E and CEMEC and covered mass-casualty response, triage, preparedness and command, humanitarian response, and simulation-based education. CEMEC's event report highlighted his contribution to CBRN preparedness.

Heejun Shin presented at EUROMED Forum in San Marino on 3 July 2026, addressing the connection between disaster medicine education and operational readiness.
Drawing on Korean experience in disaster medicine and CBRNe preparedness, he discussed integrating simulation, interagency coordination and evaluation into training.

순천향대학교 부천병원·SCH 재난의학센터와 독일 TH Köln 연구진의 협력으로 준비된 발표는 기관 간 조정, 용어와 정보의 공통 이해, 훈련 설계의 중요성을 다뤘습니다. 연구는 시뮬레이션을 중심으로 한 향후 연구 방향을 제시했습니다.
Korean–German CBRNe drill-planning research presented at ISCRAM 2026
On 1 June 2026, Heejun Shin presented a Practitioner Insights and Perspectives (PiP) paper at ISCRAM 2026 in The Hague, Netherlands, on planning a digital cross-border CBRNe drill.
The work involved collaboration between Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital / SCH Disaster Medicine Center and researchers at TH Köln, Germany. It addressed interagency coordination, shared terminology and information, and exercise design, while outlining future simulation-based research directions.
